Despite their unpopularity, iPhone crossbody straps aren’t as useless as they may seem

With the launch of the iPhone 17 lineup this fall, Apple debuted a new accessory – the crossbody strap. It certainly received lukewarm reception, but after trying one out, I actually think it’s a rather nifty concept. At least, if you’re the right person for it.

In case you don’t know, Apple’s new crossbody strap for iPhone is an adjustable strap that works with their official cases for the iPhone 17 lineup. It has two anchoring points on the bottom corners of Apple cases. This does mean that you have to go deep into Apple’s accessory offerings to utilize it, by both purchasing their official crossbody strap for $59, and by purchasing an Apple case for $50-60.

Luckily, there are a good number of third party crossbody strap options on the market. I personally used one from Orbitkey, which comes in at $35 and will work with any iPhone case. This strap isn’t really the focus here, but I will say, it’s really well made.

Why I like the idea of a crossbody strap

When talking about crossbody straps for a phone, most people immediately think: “Why not just put your phone in your pocket? This seems unnecessary.”

And sure, that’s been the approach for over a decade now, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

That said, as someone who lives in New York City and often takes my phone in and out of my pocket while walking, I actually found that having a crossbody strap was rather useful. It saved me that bit of time, and made my phone more accessible.

Is that a game changer? No. That’s why I ultimately wouldn’t invest in Apple’s crossbody strap. It’s too expensive for something that’s just slightly nifty.

The convenience factor is there, though, and it’s enough for me to say that I actually like having one. Sure, it’s a bit different – but I will say, it’s rather satisfying being able to just drop your phone when you’re done using it, rather than having to slide it into your pocket.

Wrap up

All in all, the crossbody strap is one of those accessories that you’d have to try before you understand. If you’re someone that drops your phone a lot, uses your phone as your primary camera, or someone who walks outside a lot, it can be a rather nifty accessory.

Are you someone who’d consider a crossbody strap for your iPhone? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments.
