Official: EU scraps 2035 new ICE car sales ban

Combustion vehicles will be allowed to remain on sale after 2035 in the European Union.

New, more lenient rules have been officially put forward by the European Commission which would amend today’s total ban of new ICE vehicles in a decade’s time.

Instead, the Commission proposes that total car sales in the Union would need to be 90% electric, rather than 100%, while the remaining 10% can be made up of hybrid and combustion vehicles.

However, those ICE vehicles will need to be made with low-carbon steel produced in the EU, or fuelled with e-fuels or biofuels.

These rules will now need to be signed off in the European Parliament by member states/

The bombshell proposals follow intensive lobbying from European governments and some of the industry’s biggest car makers, including Volkswagen, Renault, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Stellantis.

This is a breaking news story. More to follow.
