What you need to know
- A mid-week update from Spotify informs users about upgrades headed for lyrics, such as offline viewing when downloading songs.
- Another update includes lyric translations, which are rolling out globally to free and Premium users, alongside “Previews” on the Now Playing screen.
- Spotify’s recent updates include “Request to Jam” in Messages and the “Prompted Playlists” beta arriving in the U.S. and Canada.
Whether you’ve forgotten about lyrics or not, Spotify’s rolling out an update to make the experience better for listeners and Premium subscribers.
Early this morning (Feb 4), Spotify’s press release to Android Central revealed “upgraded lyrics” on the platform. A subsequent blog post went into more detail, beginning with how lyrics will be tailored to a user’s preferred language. Lyric translations have expanded since Spotify launched them in 2022; however, the platform has announced that this feature is arriving globally for users.
Free and Premium users can get in on this convenient feature. Users should be aware that lyric translations are not available for every song. Spotify states that, for songs that the feature is available for, users can tap the translate icon. The app will automatically convert what’s been written into your device’s primary language (whether that’s Spanish, French, Korean, you name it).
Another major update is offline lyric viewing.
Spotify Premium users will know that you can download songs to listen to without a proper connection. Beginning this week, Spotify’s rolling out the ability to take the track’s lyrics, too, when downloading for offline listening.
Sing-alongs made easy
The final update to lyrics is “lyric previews.” When viewing Now Playing, Spotify says users should soon notice lyrics appearing beneath the album cover, line by line. The post attributes “early testing’s” positivity in rolling this out to free and Premium users on Android and iOS. We’ve noticed this feature arrive already (using a Galaxy S25 Ultra). So, more users should begin noticing it as the week winds down.
All three upgrades for lyrics are arriving for mobile devices. Keep your eyes peeled moving forward.
Spotify’s off to a fast start in 2026, as its latest update involved a beta “Prompted Playlists” arriving in the U.S. This was a beta the company first started overseas. More importantly, Prompted Playlists helps users generate a playlist based on their written description. What you want, the type of vibe, genre, cultural influence, and more, are all taken into account. Users are advised to be as detailed as possible.
Elsewhere, “Request to Jam” debuted in Spotify’s Messages early in January. If you see your friend grooving to some tunes, send a request, and get going.
Android Central’s Take
I’ve been a Spotify guy for a while now, and lyrics have always felt like they were just there. I suppose it’s hard to do a lot with lyrics, as the song itself is the true star. I noticed Lyric Previews appear in the app a few days ago and thought it was a nice addition to Now Playing. It feels like an addition that’ll remind people—or, at least, alert people—that they exist. Even taking them offline seems like a small, but useful upgrade to share with someone while you’re traveling without a proper connection.
