Posted on X earlier today (Feb 10), tipster AssembleDebug claims that Google Maps will soon roll out a “Try new features” section within the app. The report suggests that this will let users “try new features before they are widely rolled out.” It’s not clear when we can expect this to arrive; however, rumors add that the first feature could be a test for “Ask Maps.” In conjunction with Android Authority, the tipster reports that the app could get an “Ask Maps” button right beneath the search bar.

Supposedly, the tipster’s dive into the app’s recent version suggests Ask Maps will let users “turn ideas into adventures.” It makes one think about having an idea for a trip, but not being sure about how to go about it. Perhaps, Google Maps’ leverage of Gemini will help users get this done by planning routes, places to eat, and visit, and much more.
Unfortunately, all we have is our speculation, as the tipster states not much was moving in this alleged discovery within the app’s code. AssembleDebug claims this feature’s test could arrive “soon.” We’ll just have to wait and see.

Google’s really started focusing on the AI capabilities of Maps in recent major updates, such as one that brought Gemini-curated suggestions to the app. If you’re looking for something to do one evening with friends, Google Maps might offer up live music. Additionally, Google rolled out better smart suggestions, quicker review summaries, and answers (of course), fueled by Gemini.
The company continued to advance its Maps AI by slowly phasing out the Assistant for Gemini completely. With Gemini, users would find improved voice command understanding for route changes and better answers for questions regarding the weather and nearby places.
