Bloomberg reported back in February that Apple was considering a new deep red color option for the iPhone 18 Pro, which some have described as crimson.
A leaker with a decent track record is today backing this report, though is doing this in a slightly odd way which may or may not mean anything …
Deep red iPhone 18 Pro report
Gurman said in the original report that it wasn’t clear whether the new color would replace Cosmic Orange or instead be an additional option.
Given the success of orange, I wouldn’t be surprised if the company keeps that option around and just adds the red as an additional choice. But red and orange might be a little too close on the color wheel to have both. We’ll see how this plays out exactly, but I can at least tell you that, as of now, red is the new flagship color in testing for the next iPhone Pros.
It had been previously rumoured that Apple was considering a purple colour, but Gurman says that both this and the reported brown option are most likely just variations of the shade of red.
Leaker backs report in an odd way
Leaker Digital Chat Station has suggested that there is a high probability of this colorway, but their evidence for this is indirect.
The iPhone 18 Pro has a high probability of being crimson, because I saw the next flagship of the Android camp proofing this color.
The implication here is that competitors have seen leaked plans for the red iPhone 18 Pro, view this as a signal that the color is likely to be popular, and are making their own plans accordingly.
9to5Mac’s Take
It’s certainly true that competitors tend to copy iPhone designs, sometimes including colors, and this was absolutely the case with Cosmic Orange. It’s also true that certain Android smartphone manufacturers (mentioning no Samsungs in particular …) try to beat Apple to market when they hear of the company’s plans.
What’s unclear, however, is whether Android brand plans for deep red models are based on any new leak or merely the existing Bloomberg report. It may well simply be the latter, which wouldn’t provide any additional support for the rumour.
I do personally think the Cosmic Orange experience has shown Apple that there is significant money to be made by offering a bold new color in its iPhone Pro lineup, so I do suspect the original report is true.
