An emulator inside your emulator? Dolphin just got Game Boy Player support.

The Nintendo GameCube.

TL;DR

  • The Dolphin emulator now has Game Boy Player support.
  • The team is using the existing mGBA emulator within Dolphin to let you play Game Boy Advance titles.
  • You’re better off using other GBA emulators, but this is still a cool feature.

The Dolphin emulator has made huge strides since its release in the 2000s. Just last month, the team added support for the Triforce arcade platform, but it’s not stopping there. The team has now added support for the Game Boy Player.

Nintendo sold a Game Boy Player accessory for the GameCube back in the day. This plugged into the bottom of the console and let you play your Game Boy/Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance titles on your TV. Now, the Dolphin team has effectively added Game Boy Player support to their emulator. Check out a GitHub screenshot below.

Game Boy Player in Dolphin

Developers in the Discord group confirmed that this new feature uses the mGBA emulator, which is already built into Dolphin. The team added this GBA emulator to Dolphin back in 2021, as some GameCube titles supported Game Boy Advance connectivity.

It’s worth noting that today is April Fool’s Day, but the Dolphin GitHub page does indeed contain several commits related to Game Boy Player support. Some commits also suggest that the functionality could come to Android.

Either way, there are great Game Boy Advance emulators out there today, so we can understand why you might not want to use Dolphin’s Game Boy Player functionality. Nevertheless, this is still a cool feature, and I’m sure this was a fun project for the developers. So if you ever wanted to play Mario Kart: Super Circuit or Ecks versus Sever via Dolphin, well, you can.
