Gemini app rolls out video upload on Android, iPhone, & web

Besides the new navigation drawer and 2.5 Pro going stable, the Gemini app is rolling out video upload and analysis. This lets you add a clip to your prompt.

Update 6/19: Google has now rolled out video upload in the Gemini app “for everyone,” including free and paid users. Make sure you’ve updated the Gemini app on iPhone/iPad or the Google app on Android (version 16.24 stable). Afterwards, tap the ‘plus’ menu and find the video in your “Gallery” or “Files.”

We’re also now seeing this capability on gemini.google.com. Just drag a file to the prompt bar.

Original 6/17: Besides documents and images, Google will let you add your own video files to a prompt. (This is in addition to the ability to ask questions about something on YouTube by pasting a link.) Gemini will analyze it and let you ask questions about the clip.

In the first (left and center) example below, I asked what time was being displayed on the Nest Hub. The video appears above with a full player interface to watch it again.

In the second (right) chat, I asked for a description and got back:

“This looks like a tranquil scene from a forest in autumn. A narrow path, covered with fallen leaves in shades of orange, brown, and yellow, winds its way through the trees. The trees themselves are a beautiful mix of fiery reds, oranges, and golden yellows, indicating the peak of the fall foliage season. The sunlight filters through the branches, creating dappled light and shadows on the path and highlighting the vibrant colors of the leaves. There’s a peaceful and serene atmosphere, perfect for a quiet walk amidst nature’s beauty. The rustling sound of leaves being stepped on further enhances the autumn forest experience.”

To upload a file, open the plus menu and select Gallery or Files. If this capability is live for your account, you can select videos. Otherwise, the file will be grayed out and cannot be uploaded.

Gemini video upload is not yet widely rolled out. Availability varies on accounts/devices we checked today, but this functionality looked to be for both free and paid accounts across Android (Google app 16.23 beta) and iOS, as well as 2.5 Flash and 2.5 Pro. This is not yet live on the web, with a “File type unsupported” message in the prompt bar.

Google has yet to update the built-in Gemini camera to capture video.
