TL;DR

  • Google is adding short-form videos to the Play Store.
  • These bite-sized shorts are videos of the apps you’re scrolling through.
  • They are meant to help with app discovery and to show how the app works.

There are millions of apps on the Google Play Store, so there’s a fairly good chance the marketplace has the particular app you’re looking for. However, all of those apps can make it a little difficult to discover new ones you’re unaware of. Google is attempting to tackle this problem with a new Play Store feature.

Google is rolling out Android updates and the March Pixel Drop today. The update is bringing new features across Google’s ecosystem, including one-handed gestures on the Pixel Watch 3 and some At a Glance updates. Not to be left behind, the Google Play Store is also getting something new — short-form video.

When opening the Play Store app, you’ll now see short, vertical-style clips that are similar to the Shorts videos you see on YouTube. However, these videos aren’t necessarily meant to entertain you. Rather, they have two intentional purposes: to inform you and to help with app discovery.

These videos are of the apps you’re scrolling through, and the content in them shows how that app works. The goal is to help you understand what the app is and what it does without you having to leave the Play Store. As mentioned earlier, scrolling through the video feed is also meant to make it easier to find new apps you may have been unaware of.

What do you think of Google adding short-form video to the Play Store? Do you think it will help you find new apps? Let us know in the comments below.
