iOS 26.5 arrived in beta this week packing new iPhone features, but a public launch isn’t too far away. Here’s the expected release date for all users.
iOS 26.5 launch expected in mid-May
Apple has a reputation for secrecy, and sometimes is able to genuinely surprise with new releases. A very recent example is the AirPods Max 2 launch that happened with no prior rumors.
But with software especially, Apple follows very consistent patterns for releases.
For example, Apple will unveil iOS 27 this June at WWDC, and ship it to all users in September—following the same schedule as always.
Smaller software updates follow predictable patterns too. So to get a good sense of when iOS 26.5 will launch, we just have to look back at prior years.
Here are the last few years of x.5 releases:
- iOS 18.5: Monday, May 12
- iOS 17.5: Monday, May 13
- iOS 16.5: Thursday, May 18
- iOS 15.5: Monday, May 16
As you can see, Apple aims for mid-May launches for its x.5 software updates.
Based on this pattern, and the timing of the first beta, a mid-May launch for iOS 26.5 seems highly likely too.
The week of May 11 seems very possible, or it could get pushed as late as the week of May 18.
In any case, we’re just over a month out from iOS 26.5’s expected public launch.
New features in iOS 26.5 so far
After one beta, iOS 26.5 so far has a handful of new iPhone features.
Apple Maps has gained a new Suggested Places feature for recommending places to check out. It offers suggestions based on trending locations and ones related to your prior searches.
It’s also expected that iOS 26.5 might be the update that brings ads to Maps in the US and Canada.
The Messages app is getting end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging soon. It’s available now in beta, and while Apple hasn’t officially committed to shipping it in the final iOS 26.5 release, that seems likely.
iOS 26.5 also appears set to introduce a new in-app subscription option for App Store apps. There are references in Apple’s release notes to a “monthly with 12-month commitment” plan.
Finally, there are EU-specific changes, like the ability for third-party accessories to support Live Activities.
Since there’s only one iOS 26.5 beta available so far, this list will likely grow before the public release date arrives.
