Next year’s ‘iPhone 20’ might be missing its standout feature, per leaker

Rumors have long indicated that next year’s 20th anniversary of the iPhone would bring a special ‘iPhone 20’ model. But now per a reputable leaker, the standout all-screen design feature of the iPhone 20 sounds like it might be in jeopardy.

Apple is ‘a long way off’ from achieving a cutout-free iPhone display, says leaker

The rumored iPhone roadmap for the next couple years offers plenty to get excited about.

After launching the ultra-thin iPhone Air last year, this fall will bring the first foldable iPhone, and next year we’re expecting a special ‘iPhone 20’ model.

That 20th anniversary model is rumored to have an all-screen design, with no cutouts and a display that wraps around and minimizes bezels.

It’s essentially the dream iPhone design that Jony Ive spoke of frequently over the years: a mere slab of glass.

But according to leaker Fixed Focus Digital, there’s a chance it may remain a dream only.

In a new post, the Weibo leaker says that Apple has been struggling to make progress with under-display technology. As a result, it’s likely to just focus on incremental Dynamic Island size reductions.

To achieve an all-screen design, Apple will need to move both Face ID components and the camera under the iPhone’s display.

The post concludes that Apple is “still a long way off from achieving a truly full-screen display.”

Is there still time for Apple to make new breakthroughs and deliver the all-screen iPhone 20 design? Absolutely. We’re still 18 months from the new model’s expected launch.

But the new post does mean we should temper expectations for Apple shipping the all-screen iPhone next year, and perhaps expect a continued shrinking of the Dynamic Island instead.
