PSA: YouTube app no longer supports these iPhone and iPad models

YouTube just released a new update for its iOS and iPadOS app, and by raising minimum OS requirements ahead of WWDC, it has in the process dropped support for six iPhone and iPad models. Here’s what you should know.

YouTube now requires iOS and iPadOS 16 in latest update

The latest YouTube update on the App Store is version 20.22.1. Its release notes give no indication of significant changes.

But despite the routine “Bug fixes, performance improvements, and more cat videos”, the app now requires iOS and iPadOS 16 to run.

This means seven iPhones and iPads are no longer supported (via MacRumors).

Here’s the full list of dropped models:

  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad mini 4

If you currently use one of these devices, your YouTube app will no longer be able to receive updates or further support.

While there may not be too many iPhone 7, 6s, and original SE models still going strong, YouTube tends to be an especially important app on older iPads.

I suspect there are plenty of users, perhaps especially parents, who have an old iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 4 still running as a device primarily meant for YouTube consumption.

To view a full list of devices compatible with iOS and iPadOS 16, you can view Apple’s support document here.
