YouTube’s rolling out an update for its Premium users across the board that adds a new AI feature for playlist creation.
The platform announced its update via an X post, stating that YouTube Premium and Music Premium subscribers will soon find “AI Playlists” available in the app. From your Library tab, YouTube states users can navigate to the plus icon (New) to find an AI Playlist option available to interact with. The app will simulate a chat thread with the AI, letting users instruct the bot on what they want it to create.
After a brief moment, the AI will provide its results. Users can then save that playlist or, what’s also likely, redo their instructions for something more refined.
YouTube adds that users can also use their voice to speak to the AI, rather than typing out their request. The post adds that users can “instantly turn an idea, mood or genre into a personalized playlist using our new AI playlist feature.” The rollout still appears to be quite slow for Premium and Music Premium users, as many in the X thread haven’t seen it yet.
Those who have gotten their hands on it are already critiquing the feature. Some users seem to want more personalization and customization (such as the ability to be more in-depth), while others are seemingly receiving the wrong set of music.
Musical genius
YouTube’s slowly been ramping up the amount of AI present in its playlists for Premium users. Recent updates include “taste match,” a feature that lets users combine their musical interests with others. These joint playlists are updated daily, and feature profile icons beside songs to show whose taste profile its come from. At times, you’ll match, though there are times when you both might find something new.
Elsewhere, YouTube Music launched an AI-generative test for artwork creation. This artwork test was for playlists, giving users a way to customize the faces of their playlists. YouTube gave testers options such as theme, as well as the ability to edit descriptions to guide the AI in the right direction. This latest AI playlist generation update comes days after users noticed that YouTube Music removed lyrics from free users, locking them behind a paywall.
