T-Mobile’s introducing its users to what it’s calling a “smart” network, powered by AI to make daily life a little easier.
Earlier this morning (Feb 11), T-Mobile announced that it’s preparing to implement a “real-time” agentic AI platform onto its cellular network for callers. The CEO of T-Mobile, Srini Gopalan, states, “Some of the biggest barriers wireless customers face are the simplest ones — like being able to understand each other.” By adding real-time AI services to its cell network, T-Mobile aims to help people connect with the ones they care about.
What T-Mobile is preparing to bring first is real-time translation services when calling on its network. Weaving it into the network, T-Mobile says it solves issues that such services have, such as forcing users to reach for other apps, subscription costs, and more.
The service unveiled Live Translation, a network-native AI feature for its 5G network. The company states that any device connected to its network will be capable of using Live Translation during calls. For specifics, T-Mobile clarifies that only one person needs to have its services to “initiate translation, and translation is instantaneous after activation.”
Interested in the beta?
Connecting people across languages is well and good, but T-Mobile states that it wants to show users a little more—so, there’s a beta. Eligible T-Mobile customers can begin signing up in hopes of receiving access later this year. The post states early testing access is expected to begin showing up by the spring.
Once this Live Translation test arrives, T-Mobile teases that users can kickstart its translation capabilities by dialing *87* to “activate or deactivate” the AI feature. T-Mobile adds that its AI service can “automatically detect two different languages and translate them in real time.” Over 50 languages are reportedly receiving support for Live Translation across more than 215 countries.
T-Mobile encourages interested users to sign up as early as possible, as spaces are limited.
Android Central’s Take
It seems like T-Mobile is stepping into the translation services users can receive on Samsung’s Galaxy phones and more with this announcement. All I have right now is what’s on the surface, which is just T-Mobile’s word for how this works. Even the company’s short teaser video hypes up how useful this is. One thing that I’m most curious about is latency—if there is any. The speed of real-time translation will undoubtedly be a boon for this feature, as users won’t want to awkwardly wait for the network’s AI to translate their loved one’s phrase.
