Why red iPhone 18 Pro would be an exciting first, despite its many red predecessors

How does Apple follow up on the fun of Cosmic Orange from the iPhone 17 Pro line? By bringing back the red iPhone, according to the latest iPhone 18 Pro rumor.

Despite making more than a half dozen red iPhone models before, the red iPhone 18 Pro will be a first…

Red as a mid-cycle release

Apple has never released a red flagship iPhone on day one.

The first red iPhone arrived as a mid-cycle release version of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. You could buy the newest iPhone in red, but not in the first six months of that model’s availability.

Apple repeated this a year later. A red version of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus was released several months after the original launch, and those models were already “old” compared to the iPhone X sold during the same cycle.

No pro red yet

Apple started selling red iPhone models on day one with the iPhone XR through iPhone 14, and there have been red iPhone SE models, but there was no red version of iPhone XS through iPhone 14 Pro.

Pro models have had more serious hues — not that red isn’t a very serious color. The choice has been between better specs or a cool red iPhone.

That choice changed, of course, with the awesome Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro.

Now we just hope that Apple delights us with another vibrant shade of some fun color and not something too deep.

iPhone 18 Pro could finally give early-adopting, flagship customers the chance to sport a cool red iPhone from day one.
