- X faces a significant outage affecting app and website access, with over 78,000 reports.
- Problems reported include issues with the app, website, and Grok AI chatbot functionality.
- No official response from X despite claims of operational systems on their status page.
X could be following Verizon as it faces a widespread outage this morning (Jan 16), as thousands of users reported that they were unable to access the social media platform’s app or the website.
At its peak, there were about 78,000 reports of the service being inaccessible. Users reported issues on Downdetector beginning around 10 am ET this morning. The issues were primarily related to the app (56%) and the website (33%), with the remaining 10% having trouble with their timeline or feed. The AI chatbot Grok, developed by xAI, also seems to be down, with users reporting issues concerning its AI generation, app, and website.
People across the U.S., Canada, and the UK report that the mobile app and desktop site showed blank feeds, with “something went wrong. Try reloading, internal server error / Error code 500. Or posts aren’t loading right now,” messages on their screen.
Android Central’s staff also faced similar issues, with Senior Editor Nick Sutrich, who was unaware of the outage at the time and thought it could have been his network connection, said, “I didn’t even get an error, it just never loads sometimes.”
Currently, there is no known solution or fix for the issue. However, the service appears to be gradually stabilizing, as some users are now reporting that they can view their feeds.
X hasn’t issued any statement about the outage yet; its developer platform status page states that “all systems are operational.”
This is a developing story…
