The best Android Game Boy-style handheld just got a lot cheaper

Bright Silver AYANEO Pocket DMG Feature

TL;DR

  • AYANEO has introduced a Limited Edition Bright Silver Pocket DMG at a much lower starting price.
  • The Bright Silver model starts at $339, undercutting the standard versions by over $100.
  • It’s the same Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 handheld as before, just in a new finish with some extras.

The AYANEO Pocket DMG is an excellent way to scratch that modern-Game-Boy itch, but it’s never been a cheap one. So it’s a lovely surprise indeed to see a new Limited Edition Bright Silver model of the gaming handheld released at a significantly lower price, without any changes to the hardware inside.

This fetching new model retains the same Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 chip, 3.92-inch OLED display, and vertical design that garnered a lot of praise from us. In our review, we called it an overkill but excellent retro handheld, with the one major drawback being the cost. Regular Pocket DMG models still start at $449, and the souped-up retro colorway is even pricier.

The Bright Silver edition, however, comes in at $339 for 8GB/128GB or $419 for 12GB/256GB, making it the most affordable official entry point into AYANEO’s vertical lineup to date. Aside from the polished silver finish and a bundle of small extras in the box, it’s the same device — just at a lower price.

AYANEO hasn’t specified how long this limited run will last, but if you’ve been tempted by the Pocket DMG and put off by its premium pricing, this is the first significant price drop the hardware has seen since its launch. You can find it on AYANEO’s site here.
