TL;DR

  • Google is rolling out a new location-sharing feature within Google Messages.
  • The feature allows users to share their real-time location with others in a chat, leveraging Find Hub.
  • Android Authority first demonstrated the feature in action last month.

In February, we uncovered a new Google Messages feature that allowed users to share their real-time location with others within the communication app. The feature is now officially rolling out as part of Google’s Android ecosystem update bundle.

“Whether you’re meeting up at a concert or getting picked up at the airport, share your location for as long as you need, with the flexibility to stop sharing at any time — entirely within your conversation,” Google writes in its release.

A new Real-time location button is now available within the attachment screen. Tapping it opens an additional screen with a duration selector offering options for an hour, the entire day, “Until you turn this off,” and a custom figure. Tapping the Send button adds a location attachment sheet to the conversation, allowing everyone in it to view the details.

The feature finally brings Google Messages in line with its chat app rivals, including WhatsApp. And while the option to monitor others’ locations has been available in Google Maps for years, there’s no longer a need to switch between Maps and Messages to view others’ locations.
